Mahindra Ushers in a New Era of Mobility at Chakan Facility

Mahindra Auto, India’s leading SUV manufacturer, hosted an exclusive showcase at their Chakan facility. This event highlighted the company’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, innovative technologies, and vision for the future of mobility, marking a key milestone in Mahindra’s journey toward sustainable and electric vehicle solutions.

A Day of Innovation and Progress

TECH DAY offered attendees a close look at Mahindra’s progress in sustainable and advanced mobility solutions. The event highlighted Mahindra’s two newly launched electric SUVs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e, which were unveiled in November 2024 under the sub-brand ‘Electric Origin SUVs’ at the ‘Unlimit India’ event in Chennai. These SUVs, built on the INGLO Electric Origin Architecture, reflect Mahindra’s commitment to global standards and innovation.

Key Features of the Electric Origin SUVs:

  • XEV 9e: A luxury electric SUV with exceptional design, cutting-edge technology, and high performance.
  • BE 6e: A dynamic and bold EV, setting new benchmarks in performance and design.

The INGLO platform, developed with expertise from over 250 global tech leaders, supports multiple body styles, spacious cabins, and features advanced LFP battery technology. With a capacity of up to 80 kWh and 250+ bhp, these SUVs are among the fastest developed by an Indian manufacturer.

Manufacturing Highlights at the Chakan Facility

Followed by the Tech day, on January 8, Mahindra’s  Chakan facility Mahindra’s advanced manufacturing capabilities at every stage of production. The Body-In-White (BIW) Shop shapes the vehicle’s frame with high precision. The Paint Shop ensures eco-friendly processes with advanced coatings. The Battery Assembly Shop employs world-class automation and rigorous testing to produce high-performance batteries, while the Trim, Chassis, and Final (TCF) Shop integrates components with accuracy, ensuring vehicles meet high quality standards before dynamic track testing.

A New Chapter in Sustainable Manufacturing

Mahindra unveiled a state-of-the-art manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant. Located in the 2.83 km² Chakan manufacturing hub, a water-positive and 100% renewable energy-powered site, this new facility is dedicated to producing Electric Origin SUVs.

Mahindra has committed ₹4,500 crores out of ₹16,000 crores planned for the F22–F27 investment cycle, focusing on powertrain development, software, technology, and manufacturing capacity.

Key Features of the EV Facility:

  • Space: 88,000 m² dedicated to EV operations.
  • Automation: Over 1,000 robots and advanced Industry 4.0 technologies for precision and efficiency.
  • Diversity: Aiming for a 25% gender diversity ratio to foster an inclusive work environment.
  • Battery Production: Advanced processes and patented technologies ensure durability and safety.

The facility incorporates AI-driven systems, autonomous mobile robots, and IoT-based ‘Nerve Center’ for real-time process insights and end to end traceability. Its compact battery assembly line uses patented designs for performance and safety. With this hub, Mahindra reaffirms its “Make in India for the World” mission and supports India’s COP26 targets for 2030.

Insights from Veejay Ram Nakra

At the event, Veejay Ram Nakra, President of the Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra, shared his thoughts on key industry topics:

Semiconductor Supply: “Semiconductors were once a challenge, but the situation has improved. The automotive and mobile phone sectors have rebalanced, and additional capacity is being set up, including in India. We’ve adopted better long-term planning to avoid future issues.”

Battery Manufacturing: “Our battery assembly facility is fully in-house, except for cell imports. With global cell supply exceeding demand, we ensure uninterrupted production of world-class electric vehicles.”

Small-Scale Industries: “Many small-scale industries are part of our supply chain, acting as tier 2 or tier 3 suppliers. They play a crucial role in supporting our tier 1 suppliers.”

Mahindra’s focus on innovation and sustainability aligns with its mission to make India a global leader in the EV revolution. The event’s theme, ‘Unveiling the Future,’ underscores Mahindra’s commitment to excellence in design, technology, and performance.
