The Role of MSMEs in Strengthening India’s Manufacturing Ecosystem

In an era where India is rapidly positioning itself as a global manufacturing powerhouse, companies like UNIX India are driving innovation in the consumer electronics space. As an ISO 9001:2015 certified brand, UNIX India has established itself as a trusted name in mobile accessories and power solutions, blending quality, affordability, and technological advancements. In this exclusive interview, Imran Kagalwala, Co-Founder of UNIX India, speaks with Sanjay Jadhav, Editor at Machine Edge Global, about India’s evolving manufacturing ecosystem, the impact of government policies, the challenges and opportunities in the consumer electronics market, and UNIX India’s vision for the future.

How does India’s manufacturing ecosystem compare to other emerging markets, such as Vietnam or Indonesia, in terms of growth potential for consumer electronics?

India’s manufacturing ecosystem for consumer electronics is evolving steadily. While the domestic market offers immense demand potential, the country is still working to build a more robust ecosystem for key raw materials, and the shortage of skilled labour remains a significant hurdle. These factors often result in higher input costs and a dependence on imports. On the positive side, MSMEs are playing a crucial role in localizing production, generating employment, and driving innovation. With targeted investments in infrastructure, technology, and skill development, India has the opportunity to build a more competitive manufacturing base and establish itself as a stronger contender in the global consumer electronics market.

In what ways has the government attempted to curb the influx of low-cost imports and promote domestic manufacturing?

The government’s initiatives like “Made in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” have been crucial in promoting local manufacturing and reducing our dependency on imports. These initiatives encourage consumers to look for “Made in India” labels, which supports demand for locally made products. However, one significant gap is the absence of an anti-dumping duty on electronics, which impacts medium and small manufacturers who struggle to compete with low-cost imports. Implementing such a duty would level the playing field, protect domestic brands, and further foster innovation in India’s electronics sector.

What are the key factors consumers consider when choosing a charger for their electronic devices?

First and foremost is compatibility—the charger must support the specific charging standards and connectors for their device. Equally important are voltage and current requirements, which ensure that the charger safely and efficiently powers the device without causing any damage. ISO certification adds a layer of trust, as it ensures adherence to global safety and quality standards. Charging speed is another major factor, with consumers preferring fast-charging capabilities for added convenience. Lastly, durability is essential—users seek chargers that are built to last and can endure regular usage.
