Utthunga secures patent for Industrial System enabling Safe Decoupled-Network Communication

Bangalore: Utthunga, a leading provider of industrial automation services and smart manufacturing solutions, has secured a patent for their novel and secure mechanism to enable data exchange between segmented networks. Titled ‘A Method and a System to Enable Communication Between a Plurality of Guarded Networks’, the patented framework has been implemented in 25+ industrial projects and deployed across 10+ OEM platforms.

The innovation addresses long-standing challenges in IT-OT integration, such as Incompatible data models across systems, communication breakdowns across isolated networks, security risks in cross-domain data sharing, complex manual configurations in traditional integration setups and limited scalability in conventional architectures.

By bridging isolated operational and enterprise systems, the patented framework enables seamless integration between process-level devices and business systems, resulting in centralized decision-making while maintaining strict network segmentation and cybersecurity protocols.

Speaking on the patent, Krishnan KM, Founder and CEO of Utthunga says, “From inception, industrial connectivity has been a strategic priority for Utthunga. This patent reinforces our deep commitment to solving foundational challenges in industrial digitalization. As IT and OT domains continue to converge, our focus is on enabling secure, scalable, and intelligent systems that can stand the test of complexity, risk, and scale. This milestone is not just a technical achievement, but a reflection of our long-term R&D vision and the trust our customers place in us to solve critical industrial challenges.”

Utthunga has steadily built a strong presence in the field of industrial communication, and is an active contributor to international standards bodies, such as the OPC Foundation, PNO, ODVA, EtherCAT, OPAS, and IO-Link.   The company also operates India’s only FieldComm Group Test Lab and hosts the country’s first PROFIBUS and PROFINET Competence Centre.

Speaking on the innovation, Praveen Kumar Singh, Chief OPC Solutions Architect, Utthunga and lead author of the patent said “This innovation was driven by recurring challenges we encountered while integrating operational and enterprise environments – particularly in high-stakes, mission-critical settings. We set out to develop a solution that could enable communication across guarded networks without adding unnecessary complexity or compromising safety. It’s been a deeply hands-on effort, and the insights gained will continue to shape how we approach connectivity challenges across industries.”

Looking ahead, Utthunga is working to drive broader industry adoption of secure communication frameworks. The company will focus on developing future-ready extensions to the patented solution, including edge-native communication modules, portable self-configuring gateways, and embedded analytics tools designed to operate within secure and segmented environments.

The company also plans to expand its R&D capabilities through dedicated Centers of Excellence aligned with global technology megatrends and the evolving demands of industrial digitalization.
