AI Driving Sustainability in Last Mile Delivery

By Darshan Ghodawat, CEO and Managing Director, AVA Global Logistics

The logistics and transport industry accounts for more than a third of all CO2 emissions which makes it the leading sector responsible for emissions in many industrialized nations. A significant aspect of this environmental impact is the last mile delivery which is responsible for the transportation of goods from a centralized distribution hub to a specific end user owing to issues like traffic and inefficient routing possibilities. Since last-mile delivery is projected to constitute about 53% of the total shipping expenses in the next few years, finding solutions that improve this approach is important in terms of cost as well as in terms of environmental sustainability.

Last mile delivery presents the most pressing challenges in terms of operational and environmental impact. However, there is a great opportunity for transformation with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies that can improve efficiency and sustainability in last mile delivery. AI, with advanced tasks such as data mining and machine learning algorithms, assists businesses in improving their operational performance, productivity, and even profitability and sustainability.

Optimization of Loads

AI powered software can analyze details related to truck loading. This means that all factors including, product weight, the size of the package, delivery places, and real-time demand trends will be taken into consideration. By ensuring that trucks are loaded to capacity while maintaining a balanced center of gravity for safety, AI can significantly reduce the number of vehicles required on the road.  This optimization reduces the fuel consumption and reduces emissions.

Route Optimization

AI Technologies which are programmed to find the best delivery route are programmed in a way that, they analyze data from sensors, cameras, and traffic history in a systematic manner to determine how best to deliver a particular package. With this, the amounts of fuel burned and the harmful emissions produced are reduced while simultaneously improving productivity of the drivers and ensuring timely deliveries.

Predictive Analysis

Artificial intelligence leverages on past behavior patterns in order to identify the future demand in the market. This information allows for correctly allocating appropriate time within which a certain area will be supplied thus reducing overlap situations. Furthermore, AI can allow for timely adjustments on delivery schedules so that optimal loads and routes are always maintained.

Dynamic Scheduling & Fleet Optimization

AI systems are very advanced in estimating outgoing volumes of deliveries and reallocating resources when required. Through the utilization of AI, driver schedules and the amount of vehicles allocated in a specific area are efficiently adjusted based on the real-time requirements of the market, which is influenced by factors like roads or weather events.

Address Validation

Accurate address validation is crucial for successful deliveries. This process is simplified with the inclusion of AI and order verification which passes through address checking and updating. Over time, these systems learn from past errors, improving accuracy and ensuring timely arrivals.

Inventory Management

AI ingestion of huge volumes of historical sales and market data gives beneficial insight into expected demand. This capability keeps businesses to maintain optimal stock levels, avoiding both shortages and excess inventory. This enables waste reduction and lowers the emissions due to excessive production.

Reducing Environmental Impact

AI makes a significant advance to ecological deliveries by designing the best routes which enable the effective use of green delivery vehicles. Shortening the routes encourages sustainable practices and effectively reduces carbon footprint—a factor increasingly important to environmentally conscious consumers.

Improved Security

AI technologies add the layer of safety in delivery through mechanisms such as facial recognition and biometric checks. Such advancements help in preventing theft and also ensure that the packages are delivered to the intended people.

Future Trends: Automation and Robotics

The AI implementation within last mile delivery is similarly facilitating the use of drones and autonomous vehicles. The likes of Google and Amazon in addition to their other operations are looking at delivering via drones to further cut down on the need for traditional vehicles. As these innovations evolve, they will positively transform logistics in terms of efficiency and ecology.

Conclusion

In summary, AI is bringing new innovations in last mile delivery with optimized load and route planning, scheduling, inventory management and security systems. Such enhancement will not only make operational processes more effective, but will also help in achieving sustainability targets which are becoming increasingly important in today’s environmentally aware market. As the logistics sector continues to embrace AI technologies, we can expect further innovations that will redefine how goods are delivered while minimizing their ecological footprint.
