For businesses, energy is no longer just a utility expense it has become a strategic business decision. Rising electricity tariffs, increasing pressure to meet sustainability goals, and the need for uninterrupted operations are compelling enterprises to rethink how they generate and consume power. While rooftop solar has already established itself as a cost-effective solution, the addition of battery energy storage is transforming renewable energy into a reliable, around-the-clock power source. Together, solar and battery storage are redefining the economics of commercial energy management.
India’s renewable energy sector is witnessing unprecedented growth. According to Mercom India Research, the country added a record 36.6 GW of solar capacity in 2025, a 43% year-on-year increase, taking cumulative installed solar capacity to 136 GW. Solar contributed 68% of all new power generation capacity added during the year, demonstrating that renewable energy is becoming the preferred choice for both utilities and businesses.
For commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers, which account for nearly 50% of India’s total electricity consumption, electricity is among the largest operational expenses. Manufacturing facilities, warehouses, hotels, hospitals, commercial buildings, and IT parks are increasingly seeking predictable energy costs in an environment of rising tariffs and volatile fuel prices. Solar power addresses this challenge by providing long-term cost stability, while battery storage unlocks even greater value by ensuring that clean energy is available whenever it is needed.
Traditionally, one limitation of solar has been its dependence on daylight. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) overcome this challenge by storing excess electricity generated during the day and supplying it during evening peak demand, cloudy weather, or unexpected grid outages. This allows businesses to maximize self-consumption of renewable energy while reducing reliance on expensive peak-hour grid electricity and diesel backup systems.
The financial case for integration is becoming increasingly compelling. According to CRISIL Ratings, renewable energy can lower electricity procurement costs for commercial and industrial consumers by 25–30% compared to conventional grid power. Adding battery storage further improves savings by enabling businesses to avoid peak demand charges, optimize energy consumption, and improve return on investment over the system’s lifetime. With battery prices continuing to decline globally, integrated solar-plus-storage projects are becoming economically viable across a wider range of industries.
Operational resilience is another major advantage. Even short-duration power interruptions can halt production lines, disrupt cold-chain logistics, interrupt healthcare services, or affect data centre operations. Solar integrated with battery storage provides backup power that enhances business continuity while reducing dependence on diesel generators, which are expensive to operate and contribute significantly to carbon emissions.
India is actively building the infrastructure needed to support this transition. According to the Ministry of Power, the country currently has nearly 47 GW of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects and over 23 GW of pumped hydro storage in various stages of development. This growing storage ecosystem will play a critical role in balancing renewable energy generation while improving grid reliability.
Deployment is already gaining momentum. Mercom India estimates that India’s cumulative installed battery storage capacity reached 5.9 GWh by the end of Q1 2026, following the addition of 4.6 GWh during the quarter alone. These figures reflect growing confidence among utilities and commercial consumers that energy storage is becoming an essential component of future power infrastructure rather than an optional enhancement.
Technology is making these investments even more valuable. AI-powered Energy Management Systems (EMS), IoT-enabled sensors, cloud-based monitoring platforms, and predictive analytics now enable businesses to optimize energy generation, forecast electricity demand, automate battery charging cycles, and detect equipment issues before they impact operations. This intelligent approach improves system performance while reducing maintenance costs and extending asset life.
Beyond financial returns, solar-plus-storage investments help businesses strengthen their ESG performance. Investors, customers, and global supply chains increasingly expect companies to demonstrate measurable progress toward carbon reduction goals. By generating and storing clean energy on-site, organizations can significantly reduce Scope 2 emissions while improving sustainability reporting and enhancing their competitive position in domestic and international markets.
The future of commercial energy is no longer about choosing between affordability, reliability, and sustainability. Solar with battery storage delivers all three. Businesses that invest in integrated energy solutions today are not simply reducing electricity costs—they are building resilient operations, protecting themselves from energy price volatility, and positioning themselves for long-term growth in an increasingly low-carbon economy.
